The 43rd winner of the 1000 Guineas, held on Thursday 1st May 1856 over the Ditch Mile, was Manganese (2/1), a chestnut filly by Birdcatcher out of Moonbeam, owned by Mr John King and Mr W H Brooke, trained at Ashgill, Middleham by John Osborne senior and ridden by John Osborne junior. The winner won by half a length in 1 minute 50 secs, with a claer 10 lengths back to the third. A field of 5 runners contested the race which was worth £1,950 (Equivalent to £192,100 in 2017)
